Voice chat on Roblox is for players 13 and older who have passed an age check: a facial age estimation from a selfie, or an ID verification. It is off by default, works only in experiences whose creators have added it, and connects you with players in similar age groups. Here is what it takes, how to turn it on, who you can talk to and what to check when the voice icon doesn't appear, from Roblox's help center.

What you need

  • Be 13 or older. Voice chat, including voice chat with friends, is closed to under-13s.
  • Pass an age check. Either facial age estimation, which Roblox runs with the company Persona from a selfie video, or ID verification with a government-issued photo ID (13 and older only). Phone verification no longer unlocks voice chat.
  • Live in a supported country, or verify your ID. In 104 countries, among them the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, India, Brazil, Mexico and most of Europe, facial age estimation is enough. Elsewhere, Roblox asks for ID verification, and voice chat may not be offered at all in some regions.
  • Play on a supported device. Voice works on computers, mobile, VR, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox, where Xbox Live party chat also works with your Xbox friends.
  • Join an experience that supports it. Creators decide whether to add voice, and an experience's description page says if it has it.

How to turn on voice chat

  1. Open Settings: the gear icon at the top right on a computer, or More (...) at the bottom right, then Settings, on mobile.
  2. Go to Account info and, under Age Group, select Continue with selfie for facial age estimation, or Continue with ID.
  3. Once your age is checked, join an experience with voice and click the headphone icon to connect. The Voice Chat toggle in the experience's settings also switches you between Connected and Disconnected; it's where PlayStation players join voice.
  4. Your microphone icon sits at the top left of the screen: tap it to mute (a red slash appears) or unmute. A green graphic moves when you speak, and a red dot means Roblox is recording audio.

Who you can talk to

Voice follows the age-based rules of chat. Facial age estimation places players in groups (5–8, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20 and 21+), and by default each group can chat with its own and the groups directly above and below it: Roblox's example is that 9–12s can chat with under-9s and 13–15s. The system is designed to keep children under 16 from talking with adults, and Roblox notes that the groups can vary by region and product.

Voice chat with friends, for talking while you play together in a group, and chat with fewer filters have their own rules:

Age-checked players Voice chat with friends and chat with fewer filters
Under 13 Not available
13–17 with 13–17 Only with trusted friends in the same age group
18+ with 18+ On by default in one-on-one chats, no need to be trusted friends
18+ with 13–17 Only between trusted friends, and an adult can add a teen as a trusted friend only in real life: from phone contacts or by scanning a live QR code

Players who have voice turned on show a speaker icon next to their name and above their avatar.

Muting, blocking and reporting

  • Mute a player: click the speaker icon above their avatar or next to their name in the Roblox menu. It mutes only their voice, not their text, and lasts for the session; click the icon in the Roblox menu again to unmute.
  • Block a player: they can no longer reach you in voice or in the experience's text chat.
  • Report Abuse: when someone breaks the Terms of Use or Community Standards, report them and pick "Voice Chat" as the category.

Recording and your data

Roblox may record voice audio anywhere on the platform for safety and moderation, and there is no voice chat without it. Recordings are encrypted, open only to moderation and safety teams, and deleted after 7 days if no violation is reported or detected. Roblox says it doesn't use or share voice data for advertising or marketing, but it may work with vetted service providers on recordings or transcripts to improve abuse detection, and it hands recordings to law enforcement when a court approves the request.

Depending on your privacy settings, Roblox can also use voice data to improve its products, speech-to-text transcription for example. To turn that off, go to Settings → Privacy & content maturity → Communication → Voice data usage and change "Voice data for product improvements". The selfie video from facial age estimation is deleted after processing, and Roblox says it receives and stores no biometric data from it.

If the voice icon doesn't appear

  • The experience may not support voice: check its description page.
  • Your age check may not be finished, or you are under 13. Phone verification doesn't count.
  • If you checked your age with a selfie outside the 104 countries, you need ID verification; in some regions voice isn't available at all.
  • If you declared 13 or older but were estimated under 13, a 48-hour grace period applies before your age group changes. If the estimate is wrong, you can verify your birthday with an ID (Settings → Account info → Continue with ID).
  • Roblox may ask for a new age check from time to time, to keep access to trusted friends and expressive chat.
