World of Warcraft: Forever has 65 Legacy challenges in six categories, and each one earns a Legacy point for your whole Battle.net account. At launch, every character can spend up to 16 of those points in three perk trees, and Blizzard says one character can earn all 16 without alts. Below: what each category asks, from the beta client (build 1.60.1.70009), and what a first character picks up on the way to 60.

How Legacy points work

The system opens with your first point: for most players, when their first character reaches level 25, though 150 in a crafting profession or a fully explored world map also counts. Points belong to the account and serve all its non-Hardcore characters, and each character spends them independently.

They go into three trees: Professions, Adventure and Resourcefulness. One perk per tree (Dedicated Study, Frequent Flier or Reagent Economy) needs 10 points spent in that tree, so a character can reach one of them, never two. Try a split in our Legacy planner.

The 65 challenges, category by category

  • Classes (27): Novice, Experienced and Master for each of the nine classes, the first time a character of that class reaches 25, 45 and 60. A second Warrior adds nothing.
  • Tradeskills (18): Journeyman, Expert and Artisan, at 150, 225 and 300 skill, in Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Enchanting, Engineering, Leatherworking and Tailoring. Herbalism, Mining, Skinning, Cooking, First Aid and Fishing earn nothing.
  • Dungeons (3): Novice Spelunker lists 6 dungeons, from Ragefire Chasm or the Hall of Thanes to Excavation Site: Wetlands; Experienced Spelunker 10, each Scarlet Monastery wing counted separately; Master Spelunker 17, up to Scholomance, Stratholme and Dire Maul. Our dungeons and raids guide has the full lists.
  • Raids (3): Conqueror of the Lair (Onyxia), plus all 13 encounters of Hyjal Summit and all 8 of the Barrow Deeps, the two new raids; Blizzard says new raids unlock on December 9.
  • Player vs. Player (12): Honor ranks 3, 7, 10, 13 and 14, from Sergeant to Grand Marshal or High Warlord; exalted with your side in Alterac Valley, Arathi Basin, Warsong Gulch and Darkspear Islands, a new 15-versus-15 battleground with no date yet; and weeks 4, 7 and 10 of the Field of Honor, the PvP season's journey.
  • Adventure (2): Explorer, for a character with Explore Azeroth (every zone map of the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor uncovered on that one character), and Lord Valthalak Laid to Rest, the dungeon set questline from An Earnest Proposition to Saving the Best for Last.

What a first character earns while levelling

Our reading of the list, not Blizzard's advice:

  • Three class points come by themselves, at 25, 45 and 60.
  • Six profession points if both primary professions are crafting ones; a gathering and crafting pair is worth three. The trade-off is buying your materials.
  • Novice and Experienced Spelunker fit the road to 60: the beta client's Group Finder places the Novice dungeons at levels 13 to 33 and the Experienced ones it has data for at 24 to 46. Each needs every dungeon on its list, so tick them off in our Legacy challenges checklist as you go.
  • Explorer grows as you quest, but finishing it on one character takes a deliberate tour.

That is at most 11 points by level 60 without PvP, 12 with Explorer. Five new Spelunker dungeons have no level data in the client yet.

Reaching 16 on one character

Blizzard counts 29 points open to one character: 3 from levelling, up to 6 from tradeskills, 12 from PvP, 2 from Adventure and 6 from dungeons and raids. Without PvP the ceiling is 17, Master Spelunker's endgame dungeons and all three raids included, so a PvE-only character can miss just one point.

Keep a gathering profession and you are three short. PvP, with 12 points, is one way to close the gap; alts are the other, since each class taken to 25 adds a point and every new character can spend the account's points on levelling perks such as Well Rested and Talented.

Hardcore, rewards and what comes next

Hardcore arrives after launch with its own tally: challenges from other rulesets do not carry over, but one earned in Hardcore counts in all the others. PvP challenges cannot be done there, and Blizzard plans 12 Hardcore-only challenges.

Points also add up across the account to unlock the Replica Ironforge Air Rifle toy, the Spectral Bear Cub pet, the Spectral Bear Tabard and the Reins of the Spectral Bear mount; Blizzard has not said how many each takes. It also plans new challenges with every content release, new perks and, later, new trees. The 16-point cap applies "at launch" and the client calls it the current seasonal cap, but no increase is announced.

Beta details can still change before the November 4 launch; our release guide covers the rest of Forever's news.
