WoW Forever PvP ruleset: one faction per player, says Blizzard

Blizzard's guide for WoW Forever's launch says players on the PvP ruleset are restricted to one faction: what it means before you create your characters.

On November 3, the day before launch, Blizzard published "WoW: Forever—What's New and What Feels Familiar", its guide for players who know the modern game. One sentence in it settles a question for anyone choosing a ruleset: "Players on PvP realms are restricted to one faction, so choose your allegiance wisely." Until now, Blizzard had spoken of faction balance systems for the PvP ruleset (our guide to rulesets).

What it means for your characters

  • One faction on PvP: on WoW Forever's PvP ruleset, you play the Horde or the Alliance, not both. Pick your side before you create your characters there.
  • Same ruleset, same faction: the guide also says characters can group, join guilds, run dungeons and raid together only within the same ruleset and faction. Agree on both with your friends first.
  • Roleplay-PvP: Blizzard's sentence speaks of PvP realms. It doesn't say whether Roleplay-PvP follows the same rule (what Roleplay-PvP changes).
  • Hardcore: the guide says it is "planned to follow a little after launch".

Before you create them

Our guide to realms and rulesets compares Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Roleplay-PvP, and our PvP guide covers Honor, the 14 ranks and their rewards. Our launch center gives the opening time where you are.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play both factions on WoW Forever's PvP ruleset?

No. Blizzard's guide of November 3 says players on PvP realms are restricted to one faction, so you play the Horde or the Alliance there, not both. It doesn't say whether Roleplay-PvP follows the same rule.

Can friends on different rulesets or factions play together?

No. Characters can group, join guilds, run dungeons and raid together only within the same ruleset and faction, Blizzard's guide says: agree on both before you create your characters.

Does the one-faction rule apply to Roleplay-PvP?

Blizzard's guide doesn't say: its sentence names PvP realms only. Roleplay-PvP keeps the PvP ruleset's world PvP, with Roleplaying's naming and behavior rules.
