The Hall of Thanes, WoW Forever's new dungeon for levels 13 to 18, lies beneath Ironforge. The way in starts in the High Seat, King Magni Bronzebeard's throne room, and ends at a portal above the lava of Old Ironforge. No quest unlocks it: anyone who reaches the portal can enter, Horde characters included. Here is the way down, the Alliance quest chain from Dun Morogh and the long Horde road through the Wetlands. The dungeon's bosses, loot and five quests are on our Hall of Thanes page.

The way in, from the High Seat

  1. In Ironforge, go to the High Seat, the throne room where King Magni Bronzebeard stands.
  2. As you walk in, take the spiderweb-covered corridor on your left, around 43.5, 52.0 on the city map: that is where the DungeonJournal addon marks the entrance.
  3. Follow the winding stairs and stone paths down into Old Ironforge.
  4. The path ends on a bridge over the lava. Thom Filch, who gives the Important Heirlooms quest, waits there by the portal.

Watch your step by the portal: a tester on Blizzard's forums reports that once you fall into that lava, there is no way back up.

Blizzard's list of Forever's nine new dungeons gives the Hall of Thanes levels 13 to 18. The Group Finder takes characters from level 13 and suggests the dungeon up to level 20.

Alliance: the Dun Morogh chain to Old Ironforge Incursion

From Stormwind, the Deeprun Tram leads to Ironforge; from Dun Morogh, the Gates of Ironforge. The quest that sends Alliance players into the dungeon ends a chain of five that starts in Kharanos:

  1. A Visitor to Dun Morogh (level 13): investigate the campsite on the hillside overlooking Gol'Bolar Quarry, east of Kharanos. It belongs to Earthseer Farsen, a dwarf visiting from Aerie Peak.
  2. Farsen's Watch (13): borrow Farsen's Farsight to watch the Dark Iron threat.
  3. Nip 'Em in the Bud (13): kill 10 Dark Iron spies at Ironband's Compound, further east.
  4. Underground Map (15): the spies can drop the Dark Iron Map, which starts this quest. Its tunnels converge beneath Ironforge: take it to Farsen.
  5. Old Ironforge Incursion (16): enter the Hall of Thanes, push to the lower vaults and take the head of Durgen Dirgehammer, the last boss, to King Magni Bronzebeard. Reward: your choice of the Calibrated Blunderbuss, the Ironforge Greathammer or Deepblaze, plus 100 reputation with Ironforge and with the Gnomeregan Exiles.

The dungeon's other quests: in Ironforge, Afadra Dunwall gives The Restless Dead, and Thom Filch gives Important Heirlooms at the portal. Inside, the Ghostly Attendant gives An Ancient Grudge, and a tablet in a vault of Durgen Dirgehammer's room starts The Treaty of Understanding.

Horde: the long road through the Wetlands

No Horde entrance has turned up in the beta: Horde players cross Alliance land, then Ironforge itself. This is the route the DungeonJournal addon draws, the same one Horde guides on YouTube follow, through Hillsbrad and the Wetlands:

  1. Characters in Kalimdor take the zeppelin from Orgrimmar to Undercity.
  2. Head south through Tirisfal Glades and Silverpine Forest into Hillsbrad Foothills, as far as Tarren Mill and its flight master.
  3. Ride east into the Arathi Highlands, then south to Thandol Span, the great bridge into the Wetlands.
  4. Follow the main road south-east to Dun Algaz, the pass into Loch Modan. Alliance guards hold a checkpoint there: keep running.
  5. Head west through the tunnel into Dun Morogh, then on to Ironforge.
  6. Take your gear off before going in. The guards will kill you more than once, and gear you aren't wearing loses no durability. The spirit healer is just outside the city, so each death costs only a short run: resurrect in quiet corners, out of the guards' sight, and gain ground with each attempt.

Two of the dungeon's five quests are open to Horde characters: An Ancient Grudge, inside, and Important Heirlooms, from Thom Filch at the portal.

The Ruins of Lordaeron, Forever's other new dungeon at these levels, has six Horde quests: they are in our Ruins of Lordaeron guide. Our new dungeons guide covers all nine and the raids to come.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Hall of Thanes entrance in WoW Forever?

Beneath Ironforge. Go to the High Seat, King Magni Bronzebeard's throne room, take the spiderweb-covered corridor on your left as you enter, around 43.5, 52.0 on the city map, and follow the stairs down to a bridge over the lava: the portal is there, next to Thom Filch.

What level is the Hall of Thanes?

Blizzard lists it for levels 13 to 18. The Group Finder accepts characters from level 13 and suggests it up to level 20, and Old Ironforge Incursion, the quest that sends Alliance players there, is level 16.

Can Horde players run the Hall of Thanes?

Yes, if they get there. The portal is open to both factions, but no Horde entrance has been found in the beta: Horde players ride through the Wetlands and Loch Modan, then cross Ironforge. Two of the dungeon's five quests are open to them.

Do you need a quest to enter the Hall of Thanes?

No. Old Ironforge Incursion, the last step of a chain that starts in Kharanos, sends Alliance players there, but anyone who reaches the portal can enter.
