Smooth stone isn't crafted: it is smelted twice. Put cobblestone in a furnace to get stone, then smelt that stone again to get smooth stone. Any pickaxe mines it back as smooth stone.
Everything below is Minecraft 26.3: the recipes come from the game's own files, the rest from the Minecraft Wiki.
Step by step
- Mine stone with any pickaxe: it drops cobblestone.
- Smelt the cobblestone in a furnace: you get stone.
- Smelt the stone in the furnace again: you get smooth stone.
Each smelting takes 10 seconds and gives 0.1 experience. Only an ordinary furnace does it: a blast furnace smelts ores and metal gear, not stone. Mining stone with Silk Touch gives stone straight away, which skips the first smelting.
What smooth stone is for
| Recipe | What it takes |
|---|---|
| Blast Furnace | 5 iron ingots, 1 furnace and 3 smooth stone |
| Smooth Stone Slab | 3 smooth stone in a row for 6 slabs, or 2 slabs per block at a stonecutter |
| Armor Stand | 6 sticks and 1 smooth stone slab |
The blast furnace smelts ores and metal gear twice as fast as a furnace, and it is the armorer's job site block.
Don't mix up the slabs: the armor stand needs a Smooth Stone Slab, while the grindstone takes a plain Stone Slab, as our guide on how to make a grindstone explains.
