About this tool
Type coordinates in the Overworld or in the Nether: the calculator gives the other side, divided or multiplied by 8 as the game does, the height unchanged — where to build the portal that links to yours. It also turns a distance into the other world’s, and counts the obsidian for a portal of any size, with or without its corners. The plan travels as a link.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you convert Overworld coordinates to the Nether?
- Divide X and Z by 8 and round down; Y, the height, stays the same. 1,000 / 64 / −300 in the Overworld is 125 / 64 / −38 in the Nether. The other way, multiply X and Z by 8. The scale is the game’s own: its data gives the Nether a coordinate scale of 8.
- How do you link two Nether portals?
- Build the second portal at the first one’s coordinates converted: the Overworld portal’s X and Z divided by 8, in the Nether, or the Nether portal’s multiplied by 8, in the Overworld, at the same height. The closer the two match these coordinates, the surer the link.
- How much obsidian does a Nether portal need?
- At least 10: a 4 × 5 frame around a 2 × 3 opening, without its four corners, which the game does not need — 14 with them. The largest frame is 23 × 23, around a 21 × 21 opening: 84 obsidian, 88 with the corners.
- How far is 7 km of the Overworld in the Nether?
- 875 blocks: every distance in the Nether is an eighth of the Overworld’s. It is the trip the Subspace Bubble advancement asks for: use the Nether to travel 7 km in the Overworld.
