A grindstone is crafted from 2 sticks, 1 stone slab and 2 planks. It removes enchantments and gives back some experience, turns two worn items of the same kind into one, and resets an item's repair cost at the anvil.
Everything below is Minecraft 26.3, Java Edition: the recipes come from the game's own files, the rest from the Minecraft Wiki.
The recipe
At a crafting table: stick, stone slab and stick in the top row, then a plank on each side of the row below, with the middle left empty. Our Minecraft crafting recipes show the grid.
- The slab must be a Stone Slab: 3 stone in a row make 6, or a stonecutter makes 2 from each stone. A Smooth Stone Slab or a Cobblestone Slab won't do.
- Stone comes from smelting cobblestone in a furnace.
- Any planks work, even two different kinds.
No crafting? Grindstones also stand in village weaponsmith houses and can turn up in trail ruins, and any pickaxe mines them.
What it does
- Removing enchantments: put an enchanted item or book in the grindstone and you get it back without its enchantments; an enchanted book becomes a plain book. Curses stay, and so does the item's name.
- Getting experience back: taking the result drops experience, between half and all of what the removed enchantments were worth: Sharpness V gives 35 points on average.
- Merging two items: two of the same kind, say two iron pickaxes, become one, with both durabilities added plus 5% of the maximum, up to full. Their enchantments are lost, except curses.
- Resetting the repair cost: the item comes out with no prior work penalty, so the anvil charges less for it again.
To enchant an item again afterwards, our Enchanting calculator plans the cheapest order at the anvil.
