As of October 6, 2026, two Minecraft capes are free for anyone who qualifies: the Aurora Cape, for watching a reward-enabled Minecraft Dungeons II stream on Twitch or TikTok until October 14 and redeeming the code by October 31, and the Hero Cape, for playing Minecraft Dungeons II before December 31 on a Microsoft account that has played the first Minecraft Dungeons. Both work in Java and Bedrock Edition; apart from the Minecraft Experience Cape, which visitors of the touring Minecraft Experience still receive, every other official cape came from an event that is over.

A cape belongs to your Microsoft account: once you have it, you keep it on every device where you sign in with that account. Below are the capes you can get now and until when, how to redeem and wear them, and every cape you can no longer earn.

The capes you can still get

Cape How to get it Deadline Where you wear it
Aurora Cape Watch a reward-enabled Minecraft Dungeons II livestream for 15 minutes on Twitch or 3 minutes on TikTok, then redeem the code Watch by October 14, 11:59 p.m. Pacific time; redeem by October 31 Java and Bedrock, not Dungeons II
Hero Cape Play Minecraft Dungeons II on a Microsoft account that has played the first Minecraft Dungeons December 31, 2026 Dungeons II, Java and Bedrock
Twisted Cape Dungeons II pre-order bonus: only pre-order buyers can still claim it Pre-orders closed on September 28 Dungeons II, Java and Bedrock
Minecraft Experience Cape Buy a ticket to Minecraft Experience: Villager Rescue and attend it 30 days after the show closes in your city Bedrock

Aurora Cape: watch a stream by October 14

Mojang's launch gift for Minecraft Dungeons II is a cape for Minecraft itself: you can't wear it in Dungeons II.

  1. Until October 14, watch any reward-enabled Minecraft Dungeons II livestream for at least 15 minutes on Twitch or 3 minutes on TikTok. Only time spent on a stream that is live counts.
  2. Your code then arrives in your Twitch Inventory or your TikTok notifications.
  3. Redeem it at minecraft.net/redeem by October 31, 2026, with the Microsoft account you play Minecraft on.

There is one code per person and Microsoft account, and Mojang warns that supplies are limited, so don't wait for the last day. The watching window closes at the same moment everywhere:

Where Last moment to watch
Los Angeles (PDT) Wednesday, October 14, 11:59 p.m.
New York (EDT) Thursday, October 15, 2:59 a.m.
UTC Thursday, October 15, 6:59 a.m.
London (BST) Thursday, October 15, 7:59 a.m.
Berlin, Paris (CEST) Thursday, October 15, 8:59 a.m.
Sydney (AEDT) Thursday, October 15, 5:59 p.m.

Mojang writes "PST", but California is on daylight time on October 14 (UTC−7): we give that reading, the earlier of the two. The rest of the game, its price and its reviews are in our Minecraft Dungeons II guide.

Hero Cape: play Dungeons II by December 31

You don't need to have bought the first Minecraft Dungeons: Mojang counts any save data of that game linked to your Microsoft account, from Game Pass or a couch co-op session for example. Launch Dungeons II signed in with that account; once you can equip the cape there, sign in to Minecraft Java or Bedrock with the same account to unlock it in Minecraft too. Sessions of the first game played without signing in to a Microsoft account may not count, and the check can take some time.

Twisted Cape and Minecraft Experience Cape

Twisted Cape. If you pre-ordered Dungeons II but never claimed the cape, sign in to Dungeons II with the Microsoft account of the pre-order, check the Collectibles screen, then sign in to Minecraft with the same account.

Minecraft Experience Cape. Every guest of Minecraft Experience: Villager Rescue, the touring real-life Minecraft adventure, gets a code for a half-zombie, half-villager cape, on a card at the exit or by email depending on the city. On October 6, 2026, its official site lists the show at American Dream in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The promotion's terms give 30 days after the show closes in your city to redeem the code (minecraft.net's redeem page says 60) and name Bedrock Edition only, so redeem it as soon as you get home.

Two other capes stay inside Dungeons II: the Soul Cape, which comes with its Deluxe Edition, and the Corrupted Creeper Cape, which Mojang will hand out at events and promotions, each saying whether it reaches Minecraft.

How to redeem a cape code

Cape codes have 25 characters, which Mojang calls 5x5 codes. Mojang says they are redeemable on Xbox and PC, and the cape then works on every platform:

  1. Go to minecraft.net/redeem in a web browser.
  2. Enter the code and select Submit.
  3. Sign in with the Microsoft account you play Minecraft on, then confirm.

The cape then appears in your Dressing Room. A child account under 9 can't redeem codes for promotional items until the family organizer sets its age rating to 10 or older in Microsoft Family Safety. Codes for the game, Minecoins or Realms, and codes for consoles, are covered in our guide to redeeming Minecraft codes.

How to wear a cape in Bedrock and Java

In Bedrock Edition, on any device:

  1. Start Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, signed in with the Microsoft account that received the cape.
  2. Select Dressing Room, then open the side menu with the three lines at the top left.
  3. Open Capes and equip yours.

Your capes follow your account to Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, phones and tablets, and to Nintendo Switch 2 from October 27 (see our Minecraft on Switch 2 article).

In Java Edition, a promotional cape lands in Bedrock first, so you claim it there once:

  1. In the Minecraft Launcher, signed in with your Microsoft account, open Minecraft: Bedrock Edition and find the cape in the Dressing Room. Owning Java on PC means owning Bedrock for Windows too: when the two were bundled in 2022, owners of one received the other for free.
  2. Close Bedrock, then in the launcher open Minecraft: Java Edition and its Skins tab.
  3. Select … on the skin you use, then Edit.
  4. Choose your cape, select Save & Use, and restart Java Edition.

In the game, Options, then Skin Customization, has a Cape button that shows or hides it. If a cape is missing, give it time: Mojang delivers challenge rewards within 30 days, and syncing an account can take up to 15 minutes at busy times. Then restart the game and check that you are signed in with the account that earned it.

Capes you can no longer get

These capes stay on the accounts that earned them, but nobody can earn them anymore. Newest first:

Migrator Cape Moving a Mojang account to a Microsoft account 2021 to September 19, 2023

The Mojang account migration closed for good on September 19, 2023, and the 15th anniversary claim page is gone from minecraft.net. Mojang has not announced the return of any of these capes.

Bought capes, code lists and mod capes

Mojang's own capes are not for sale: they come from events and promotions. The Bedrock Marketplace also sells Character Creator capes made by its creators, for Minecoins; like every Character Creator item, they only show in Bedrock.

A cape code works once, on one Microsoft account, and Mojang's terms make codes non-transferable. A "free cape code" from a list or a generator has already been used or never existed, and a site selling one sells something the terms don't allow.

Mods have their own capes, which vanilla Minecraft doesn't show. Donating to OptiFine, for example, gives a cape that only players running OptiFine can see.

When is the next cape?

Mojang announces each cape on minecraft.net, often with a launch, a Minecraft Live show or a community challenge: in 2026, the Builder and Crafter capes came with TwitchCon in May, and the Aurora Cape with Dungeons II in September. As of October 6, no other cape is announced. Between two capes, our seed map, crafting recipes and enchanting calculator cover the game itself, and our Minecraft Live recap lists what Mojang has announced next.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get a cape in Minecraft?

Capes come from Mojang's events and promotions. As of October 6, 2026, you can earn the Aurora Cape by watching a reward-enabled Minecraft Dungeons II stream for 15 minutes on Twitch or 3 minutes on TikTok until October 14, and the Hero Cape by playing Minecraft Dungeons II before December 31 on a Microsoft account that has played the first Minecraft Dungeons.

How do you get the Aurora Cape in Minecraft?

Watch any reward-enabled Minecraft Dungeons II livestream for at least 15 minutes on Twitch or 3 minutes on TikTok before October 14, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time. The code arrives in your Twitch Inventory or TikTok notifications; redeem it at minecraft.net/redeem by October 31. The cape is for Minecraft Java and Bedrock, not for Dungeons II.

How do you put a cape on in Minecraft Java?

A promotional cape lands in Bedrock first. Open Minecraft: Bedrock Edition from the Minecraft Launcher with your Microsoft account and find the cape in the Dressing Room. Then open Java Edition's Skins tab, select … on your skin, then Edit, choose the cape, select Save & Use and restart the game.

How do you equip a cape in Minecraft Bedrock?

Start Minecraft: Bedrock Edition signed in with the Microsoft account that received the cape, select Dressing Room, open the side menu with the three lines at the top left, then Capes, and equip it. It works the same way on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and phones.

Can you still get the Common Cape or the Copper Cape?

No. The Common Cape was given for signing in to Bedrock Edition with a Microsoft account from May 6, 2025 to May 5, 2026, and the Copper Cape came from the Copper Cape Quest in October 2025. Mojang has not announced the return of either; players who earned them keep them.

Can you buy a cape in Minecraft?

Mojang doesn't sell its own capes: they come from events and promotions, and the Soul Cape of the Minecraft Dungeons II Deluxe Edition stays in that game. The Bedrock Marketplace sells Character Creator capes made by creators, which only show in Bedrock, and Mojang's cape codes are non-transferable.
