On Roblox, your username is your account's unique name, the one you sign in with, and every change costs Robux. Your display name, the name other players see in experiences and on your profile, is free to change, but only once every seven days. Both are edited in Settings, under Account Info: here are the steps, the rules and what happens to your old name, as Roblox's help center describes them.
Username or display name: the difference
- Username: your unique identifier. No other account can have it, you sign in with it, and your profile shows it as @username beneath your display name.
- Display name: the name you choose for how you appear in experiences and on your profile. It isn't unique, so other players may have the same one, and some users see it labeled simply "Name".
Both are visible across Roblox and in the experiences you join, and Roblox filters them, like all text on the platform, against its Community Standards.
How to change your username
Roblox's help page gives the same steps for a web browser and for the mobile apps, and none for consoles.
- Log in to your account; if you can't, recover your password first.
- Open Settings: the gear icon at the top right of the site in a browser, or More (the three dots) in the mobile apps.
- Select the Account Info tab, then the Change Username button (the pencil icon).
- Enter your new username, then your current Roblox password.
- Select Buy.
From then on, you sign in with the new username and your current password.
Every change costs Robux, including a return to an old name. Roblox's help center no longer states the amount; a player's bug report on Roblox's developer forum, posted on September 26, 2026, describes the standard charge as 1,000 Robux. Small edits get no discount, so capitalizing a few letters is charged like any other change, and the help page mentions no waiting period between changes.
How to change your display name
- Log in and open Settings (the gear icon in a browser, More in the apps).
- Select Account Info, then the Change Display Name button (the pencil-and-paper icon).
- Enter the new name and click Save.
- Refresh the page: your display name should now differ from your username.
It costs nothing, but you can change it only once every seven days. Japanese characters are in beta for display names, not yet open to every user, and Roblox plans to support more characters later.
The rules for names
Roblox's help center gives these guidelines for usernames:
- 3 to 20 characters;
- letters and numbers only (A–Z, 0–9), plus at most one underscore, never at the start or the end;
- no inappropriate words or phrases;
- no personal information, such as first or last names, phone numbers, street names or addresses.
A username can't be one that belongs to another account, and you can't swap usernames with your own alt account. Display names must follow Roblox's Community Standards and Terms of Use; one that breaks them may be reset to your username.
What happens to your old username
Your previous usernames stay on the account: they appear in your Settings and on your profile, and other players can see them through People search, so a new name doesn't hide the old ones. You can switch back to a past username with the same steps, but it costs Robux again. The account keeps its original creation date. What the help center doesn't say is whether another player can later claim a username you've left.
Younger players and unverified accounts
Roblox's help pages on name changes set no minimum age, but a few rules weigh more on younger players and on accounts without a verified email:
- No real name in a username. Roblox's privacy policy lists it among its rules for signing up: never use your own name or other personal information in a username.
- Display names are looser, but only for eligible users. The same policy lets eligible users include certain personal information in a display name; in Australia, for instance, users under 17 can't use their real name in theirs.
- Robux first. The change is paid from the account's Robux balance; our guide to Roblox parental controls covers the spending limits a linked parent can set.
- An email or phone number first. If you forget your new username, Roblox can only find it through an email address or phone number added to the account beforehand, or on a purchase receipt, since some show it. Without any of these, the account can't be recovered. Under 13, a parent can verify their own email as the parental recovery email in Settings > Account Info.
Pick a username with care: each change is paid and old names stay visible, whereas a display name can be tried out and changed again a week later. To add Robux safely, see our guides to Roblox gift cards and free Robux scams; more guides are on our Roblox page.
