Netherite comes from Ancient Debris, a rare block of the Nether. Smelt it into Netherite Scrap, craft 4 scrap and 4 gold ingots into a Netherite Ingot, then upgrade diamond armor and tools at a smithing table, with a Netherite Upgrade template from a bastion remnant.
Everything below is Minecraft 26.3: the recipes and chest contents come from the game's own files, the rest from the Minecraft Wiki.
From ancient debris to the ingot
- Mine Ancient Debris in the Nether with a Diamond Pickaxe or a Netherite Pickaxe: any other tool gets nothing. It lies between Y 8 and 119, most of all around Y 16, and our ore levels guide gives the best heights.
- Smelt it in a furnace or a blast furnace: each block gives 1 Netherite Scrap.
- Craft the ingot: 4 Netherite Scrap and 4 Gold Ingots, in any order, make 1 Netherite Ingot.
Ancient Debris withstands normal explosions, which is why players blow tunnels open with TNT, or with beds, which explode when you try to sleep in the Nether: the debris stays. Dropped in lava, it floats and doesn't burn.
The Netherite Upgrade template
Every upgrade uses up one Smithing Template (Netherite Upgrade). It is only found in bastion remnants: there is always one in the treasure room chest, and a 1 in 10 chance in each of their other chests. That treasure chest can also hold netherite ingots, scrap and ancient debris. Our Bastion Remnant Finder shows where they are in your seed.
To get more, copy one at a crafting table: the template in the top middle, 1 netherrack in the center and 7 diamonds in the other slots give 2 templates.
